For 2026, 2027 and 2028, the statutory-holiday list is based on section twenty-two of the Northwest Territories Employment Standards Act. It names eleven holidays, including National Indigenous Peoples Day, the first Monday in August and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Act gives date rules only for the August holiday and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, observed on September thirtieth. Victoria Day follows the federal Holidays Act’s rule of the first Monday immediately preceding the twenty-fifth of May, and Labour Day follows the federal Interpretation Act’s designation of the first Monday in September. Thanksgiving Day is listed without a date. The territory’s Employment Standards FAQ explains that Easter Monday and Boxing Day are not statutory holidays, though employers may choose to recognize them. The Yellowknife school calendar is linked below under Nearby.

Legal basis: Employment Standards Act, section 22(1) (statutory holidays), which also sets the first Monday in August and September 30; Victoria Day by the federal Holidays Act, section 4, and Labour Day by the federal Interpretation Act, section 35 (Northwest Territories: Employment Standards Act, SNWT 2007, c.13).

Common questions

Where does the August Civic Holiday fit in the territory’s list?

The confirmed dates for Civic Holiday (first Monday in August) are listed here: Monday, August 3, 2026; Monday, August 2, 2027; Monday, August 7, 2028. Section twenty-two of the Northwest Territories Employment Standards Act lists the first Monday in August as a statutory holiday. The yearly tables label it Civic Holiday (first Monday in August) and use that date rule. National Indigenous Peoples Day is listed separately in the same section.

Why do Victoria Day and Labour Day have dates while Thanksgiving Day is listed without one?

No confirmed date for Thanksgiving Day appears in the official sources consulted for this page, last checked on November 2, 2026. Section twenty-two of the Northwest Territories Employment Standards Act names all three holidays without giving their date rules. Victoria Day follows the federal Holidays Act’s rule of the first Monday immediately preceding the twenty-fifth of May. Labour Day follows the federal Interpretation Act’s designation of the first Monday in September. Thanksgiving Day is shown without a date because the sources used for this page do not establish its date rule. The basis column identifies the source supporting each entry.

Are Easter Monday and Boxing Day an employer’s choice in the territory?

Yes. An employer may choose to recognize Easter Monday or Boxing Day in the Northwest Territories. Neither belongs to the statutory-holiday list described by the territory’s Employment Standards FAQ. For time off at a particular workplace, check whether the employer’s agreement recognizes either occasion.
