Alberta distinguishes general holidays from optional occasions an employer may choose to recognize. The list for 2026, 2027 and 2028 draws on the Employment Standards Code and the province’s general holidays page, which supplies the published dates. Alberta Family Day and Remembrance Day belong to the general-holiday list; Heritage Day and Boxing Day sit among the optional holidays instead. Thanksgiving Day has a dated entry because the province prints its rule. School planning needs a separate calendar: Alberta boards set their own schedules, and spring break weeks appear on the Alberta school page.

Legal basis: Employment Standards Code, section 25 (general holidays), with the dates printed on the alberta.ca general holidays page (Employment Standards Code, R.S.A. 2000, c. E-9 (King's Printer, current as of November 26, 2025)).

Heritage Day is optional for employers; Alberta Family Day is a general holiday. Easter Monday, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Boxing Day are optional too. Which published rule gives Alberta’s Thanksgiving date?

Alberta’s general holidays page places Thanksgiving Day on the second Monday in October. The Employment Standards Code names the holiday without stating that rule. The confirmed dates for Canada Day are listed here: Wednesday, July 1, 2026; Thursday, July 1, 2027; Saturday, July 1, 2028. Alberta’s published rule places the Canada Day holiday on the following day when it falls on a Sunday. The Canada Day row in the table above and its basis column show the calendar information; individual employment arrangements can be checked against provincial guidance or the employer’s agreement.
