Newfoundland and Labrador’s Labour Standards Act names its public holidays without giving their dates. The entries for 2026, 2027 and 2028 therefore draw their calendar information from the Shops’ Closing Act and the province’s annual Shops Closing Holidays notice. Memorial Day appears with Canada Day in the public-holiday list, alongside occasions such as Good Friday and Remembrance Day. Other names in the closing notice, including Regatta Day, Victoria Day, Thanksgiving Day and Boxing Day, are presented separately because a shop closing day is not necessarily a Labour Standards Act public holiday.

Legal basis: Labour Standards Act, section 14 (public holidays), with dates from the Shops' Closing Act and the official Shops Closing Holidays notice (Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Standards Act, RSNL1990 c. L-2).

Common questions

How are dates added to Newfoundland and Labrador’s named public holidays?

The Shops' Closing Act and the province’s annual Shops Closing Holidays notice supply calendar information for the Labour Standards Act’s named holidays, including Memorial Day alongside Canada Day. The Shops' Closing Act places Labour Day on the first Monday in September. The basis column in the yearly tables identifies the supporting source. For 2027, the verified list includes 6 statutory holidays with confirmed dates, from Friday, January 1, 2027 to Saturday, December 25, 2027.

Are Regatta Day and Boxing Day public holidays or shop closing days?

Regatta Day and Boxing Day appear as closing days in the provincial Shops Closing Holidays notice, but neither belongs to the Labour Standards Act public-holiday list. Victoria Day and Thanksgiving Day are also shown separately. A shop closing designation alone does not establish public-holiday status under that Act.

Does Newfoundland and Labrador allow a replacement day for Remembrance Day?

No. The confirmed dates for Remembrance Day are listed here: Wednesday, November 11, 2026; Thursday, November 11, 2027; Saturday, November 11, 2028. The Remembrance Day Act says no other day may be substituted for Remembrance Day. Read the Remembrance Day row in the table above with its basis column; the entry does not imply that an alternative observance date can be chosen.
